What is a Service Animal?
It is important to understand the exact definition of a service animal, as only service animals have legal protections under the ADA, unlike emotional support animals (ESAs). Service animals are permitted to be with their owners in almost all public places and accompany their owners through day-to-day life. According to the ADA, the definition of a service animal is a dog that is "individually trained to do work or perform tasks for a person with a disability." These disabilities can include things like psychological disorders, mobility impairments, or medical conditions.
While training a mobility assistance or medical service animal can be very challenging to do on your own, training a psychiatric service animal can be done by most pet parents. These dogs are often trained to interrupt self-harming behaviors, flashbacks, and panic attacks through tactile stimulation and deep pressure therapy.
The Benefits of Having a Service Animal
You Can Bring Your Service Animal Nearly Anywhere
Service Animals are granted full public access rights. This means you can live with them in "no-pet" policy housing, bring them inside restaurants, hotels, Ubers, etc.
Service Animals Fly For Free
Service Animals fly in the cabin of an airplane free of charge.
Avoid Pet Fees and Deposits
Service Animals are exempt from all pet fees, pet rent, and pet deposits.
No Breed or Weight Restrictions
As long as you have a qualifying disability and your dog is properly trained then all breeds qualify as a service animal.

What Is the Difference Between an ESA and a Psychiatric Service Dog?
While an ESA requires no specific training and helps their handler by their simple presence, a PSD must be trained to perform at least one task to help mitigate the symptoms of a mental or emotional disability.
Because a PSD is legally considered a service animal, they have more legal rights than an ESA. While both animals are legally required to be able to live with their handler in any housing, a PSD is also granted public access. This means they can accompany you in shops, at your workplace, and can even fly with you for free in the cabin of an airplane.
